In February, Houston Methodist’s 10th Annual Surgical Services Fair brought surgical staff together for a week of learning, collaboration, and creativity. With a poster competition, a fashion show, and an educational conference, this year’s event was one to remember! A special thanks to our VP, Tony DeDominico, for his support in making this event possible.
Advancing Surgical Excellence
The educational conference was a key highlight, offering insights into surgical innovations, quality patient care and perioperative communication. One standout presentation by Dr. Wolf focused on minimally invasive techniques for atrial fibrillation with a memorable perspective that atrial fibrillation “is a nerve problem, not a heart muscle problem!” Another engaging presentation by Natalie Jones, Francia Marshall, and Melissa Harrison emphasized team communication in high-stakes environments, reinforcing the importance of standardized handoff to improve patient safety. There were several other informative speakers sharing their expertise on topics such as robotic surgery, malignant hyperthermia, congenital heart disease surgery, clinical inquiry, artificial intelligence, and innovations in interventional radiology (IR).
According to a post-conference survey, 100% of attendees felt they gained new knowledge to apply to their practice. One attendee shared, “The guest speakers are such talented individuals - listening to how they have made impactful contributions in healthcare has really inspired me to do the same.”

Additionally, this year’s conference held a canned food drive benefiting Nora's House, a nonprofit organization that provides a home for solid organ transplant patients and their families. It was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to support a meaningful cause!
