Methodist Advancement into Professional Practice (MAPP) Program
4 MIN READ
This summer, Houston Methodist Hospital welcomed 15 baccalaureate nursing students from across the nation as part of the MAPP (Methodist Advancement into Professional Practice) Program. These students each completed 8 weeks of clinical experiences at the hospital and a student project investigating professional development or self-care for nurses.
Assigned one-on-one with a nurse preceptor in a unit chosen by the participant, the MAPP students are offered the rare opportunity to work alongside a nurse full time before completing nursing school. The students are also provided three “off-unit” observation experiences. Some of the chosen observation experiences included shadowing nurses or nurse practitioners in the operating rooms, women’s services, emergency department, social work, nursing administration, and the CERT team. This opportunity was described as “10/10, would highly recommend” and “invaluable” by the MAPP students this year.
In celebration of the student’s hard work and dedication, a farewell activity and dinner were planned. The MAPP students visited the Houston Museum of Natural Science – Body Worlds exhibit.
The MAPP program has two Year-Round sessions for our local nursing students and Summer for out-of-town nursing students. For more information on the MAPP program, visit https://www.houstonmethodist.org/education/nursing/advancement-into-professional-practice-program-mapp/.
