As patient conditions become more complex, the need for early detection of patient deterioration has grown. At Houston Methodist, constant innovation driven by patient needs has made artificial intelligence (AI) and technology essential in daily routines for healthcare workers. By using wearable intelligence devices, virtual monitoring teams can better identify abnormal trends and report early signs of patient deterioration, ultimately saving lives.
From the emergency department to the acute care setting, vital signs are crucial for assessing a patient’s hemodynamic stability. The Bio IntelliSense Button, a new addition to Houston Methodist’s Care Redesign Initiative, tracks resting heart and respiratory rates, mobility levels, skin temperature and sleep metrics. The data is sent directly to the EPIC charting systems every hour, allowing virtual monitoring teams to promptly alert clinicians to any concerning trends. Patient Care Assistants (PCAs) play a vital role in observing patients and reporting abnormal vital trends to the registered nurse. Previously, PCAs had to record all vitals manually, but the Bio Button now automates much of this task while having key vital signs monitored more often. This device empowers medical professionals to enhance patient care by reducing the time spent on routine tasks. The Bio Button aims to:
  • Streamline workflow
  • Reduce hospital stays and cost
  • Provide actionable data to clinical teams and patients
  • Personalize care and improve patient experience
The Bio Button also offers numerous benefits, including better diagnostic measures, enhanced predictive data analytics, and increased accessibility and patient engagement. Providing access to predictive data analytics helps ease workloads and personalize care, improving to enhance both patient experiences and outcomes.
