Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming nursing practice and healthcare delivery. Currently, the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) does not offer a specialty certification focused specifically on AI in nursing. However, many colleges and universities are developing AI-focused certificate and academic programs to help nurses build knowledge and skills in this emerging area.

Why AI Education Matters

The growing availability of AI-focused certificate programs reflects increasing interest in AI throughout nursing research and practice. In a 40-year bibliometric analysis of AI in nursing, Dikmen and Elmali (2026) analyzed 530 AI-related nursing publications and identified nursing education, machine learning, robotics, clinical decision support systems and AI applications in healthcare as prominent areas within the nursing literature. The authors reported a substantial increase in AI-related nursing publications after 2018, demonstrating growing interest in AI applications across nursing practice, education, leadership and research. As AI continues to influence nursing practice and healthcare delivery, academic institutions have begun developing educational programs to help nurses build foundational knowledge and skills for the responsible use of AI.
