Strong communication skills are essential for personal and professional growth. Effective communication allows leaders to clearly define their visions, inspire others and empower the team around them to achieve their goals. At Houston Methodist, the Magnet Program Directors host a virtual quarterly course, Shared Governance: Essentials for Effective Council Leadership, to all employees in the system to help guide new or existing council leaders and members. The interactive professional development course offers strategies and training on effectively leading unit-based or house-wide councils and structuring their council's processes and activities to ensure they meet Magnet requirements.
The participants will learn about the impact of shared governance in creating and sustaining a Magnet culture of nursing excellence and interprofessional collaboration. They will utilize transformational leadership attributes in their council roles and understand the importance of these attributes to facilitate shared decision-making and interprofessional collaboration. Participants will learn strategies to engage council members and practice effective interpersonal communication techniques to produce environments that foster effective teams.
Attendees will also understand the importance of measuring outcomes when developing SMART goals to track their progress and make improvements. Participants will receive additional resources and training to support their council's process improvement projects and evidence-based practice initiatives, ensuring they follow the appropriate project approval process.
All employees may register for the Shared Governance: Essentials for Effective Council Leadership course via the Learning Management System (LMS) platform by searching for the title. The System Magnet Program Directors also offer the Transformational Leadership Workshop biannually as a professional development opportunity for leaders to help align their strategies and skills to maintain a Magnet Culture. We look forward to your future participation and appreciate your continued support in driving nursing excellence!
