Houston Methodist has earned the reputation of having the best registered nurses, patient care assistants and unit administrative assistants in Texas. It is well-known that Houston Methodist has been designated as a Magnet status facility five times, with many more to come. The first designation was obtained in 2002, then followed by 2006, 2011, 2016, and most recently in 2021. What does it say about a facility that has been recognized as a Magnet level facility? It shows that the facility fully supports its nurses and staff in their growth and development, which leads to better patient outcomes. This is highly optimal as the patient is the center of everything we do. Every day, there are advancements made in medicine, technology and nursing that make it an exciting time to be in the healthcare field.
As exciting as the future is for nursing and healthcare, what if you do not have a desire to be a nurse? There is absolutely nothing wrong with this. As a UAA, you have already encountered a large variety of healthcare workers in different disciplines. Not everyone in healthcare needs to be a nurse to be successful in their career. There are so many opportunities for advancement, no matter what your role may be. There are many schools and programs out there available for those who wish to pursue other things. Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certifications, phlebotomy, radiology technicians, EKG/Telemetry techs, respiratory therapists, physical therapy assistants, etc.; the list goes on and on. Houston Methodist has wonderful things in place for support, such as the tuition reimbursement program, which can be a big help in pursuing your dreams!
Again, being a nurse at the bedside is not for everyone, but there are other ways to grow, change and move into other roles. Houston Methodist is full of good resources and people that know where to go. Just reach out, and you may find the path you are looking for.
