The Center for Nursing Research, Education, and Practice (CNREP) at Houston Methodist is uniquely vital in the global nursing community. It is dedicated to fostering ongoing professional development rooted in research and exemplified by the highest standards of nursing practice. With a vision to propel the nursing profession forward globally through science, education and practice, CNREP strives to lead innovative health care solutions for complex patient issues.
Our mission and vision are further strengthened through our collaboration with Houston Methodist Global Health Care Services. This partnership allows us to disseminate nursing education to other countries and share how our department implements rigorous educational projects. Education requires constant revision of content and development based on evidence, patient safety and quality.
In collaboration with our global department, we have welcomed nurses and nurse leaders from other countries to visit Houston Methodist (HM). This exchange of knowledge and experience is invaluable, as it allows us to share how evidence-based nursing practice is critical to quality patient care outcomes. We have had nurses from Taiwan shadow our staff nurses to learn how we lead medicine at the bedside. Nurse leaders have learned about our culture, and visited CNREP to learn about our curriculums and how to bring evidence into our daily practice.
In March 2024, Centro Médico ABC nurses participated in a customized educational program developed in partnership with the CNREP team. Hosted by the “Pink Ladies,” a dedicated women's volunteer group at ABC, the four nurses toured our nursing simulation center, learned about innovations in nursing at Houston Methodist and observed within their specialty areas of bone marrow transplant, dialysis and the ICUs.
Houston Methodist Global provides opportunities for CNREP to speak to nursing staff at TecSalud Hospital in Monterrey, Mexico. CNREP provided an educational session to their nurses at the two hospitals they have. The session taught them about evidence-based practice (EBP) and how to motivate their nurses to start working on projects and literature reviews to assist with the hospital’s Magnet® designation. Our credentialing department was also able to help with some quality audits, and the Magnet® program director from Houston Methodist Clear Lake (HMCL) assisted and provided all necessary tools for their Magnet® designation.
The strong collaboration with TecSalud continues, and they send staff nurses to visit HM to learn more about our hospital and nursing practice. The scholarship-awarded nurses spent five days in our hospital, rotating in different units and took back to their country all the necessary information to share with the rest of the staff and implement the new knowledge into practice.
We encourage Houston Methodist nurses to submit abstracts to national and international conferences to share with the world all the amazing work and initiatives they do to ensure patient safety and quality. One of our abstracts about effective communication during handoff between registered nurses and patient care assistants was approved for a podium presentation at the 34th Sigma International Congress, where we were able to share our efforts and dedication to our patients globally with many other countries.
Researching best practices helps us improve the excellent quality of care we provide to our patients, which is crucial for our success. Sharing all our initiatives and projects globally depends on you at the bedside. Your role in submitting abstracts to different nursing conferences, both nationally and internationally, is integral to our mission. Let’s use all the resources we have to share with the world everything we do at Houston Methodist to ensure patient safety and the excellent quality of care we provide.
