Houston Methodist The Woodlands (HMTW) is a Magnet-recognized institution committed to empowering its nurses at every level. The Houston Methodist Clinical Career Path is a career progression model committed to advancing the scientific foundation of nursing while supporting individual professional development. The Clinical Career Path evaluates each nurse’s credentials, competencies and professional contributions and plays an integral part in staff recognition, compensation and retention.
As the lead facilitator for the RN Clinical Career Path at HMTW, I have had the privilege of guiding and mentoring more than 150 nurses on their promotion journey. All nurses are invited to attend a Clinical Career Path Informational session, where they gain valuable insight into promotion requirements and the application process and receive resources to help ensure their success. Promotion candidates are assigned a Clinical Career Path sponsor as an additional resource, and staff progress is monitored as they navigate the program.
The Clinical Career Path fosters professional development and promotes a culture of clinical inquiry. Registered nurses (RNs) can attend a foundational Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) Workshop, which guides navigating and executing an EBP or Process Improvement (PI) project. During their promotion interview, candidates are asked to showcase their involvement in an EBP or PI initiative within their departments. HMTW empowers nurses to drive meaningful change and innovation within their practice by providing comprehensive tools, resources and mentorship.
