Houston Methodist currently licenses Elsevier’s Clinical Skills (formerly Mosby’s Skills) as the toolbox, or “how to” for skills and procedures used by both new and seasoned nurses/clinicians. The skills offer a brief but concise, step by step, evidence-based best practice for each skill. Within each skill, you will find an overview of the skill, supply lists, rationales, illustrations, expected and unexpected outcomes, a checklist for steps completed, as well as a list of what should be included in documentation post-procedure. Each skill has a section, Monitoring and Care, that outlines potential changes or complications that would alert the nurse to changes in the patient’s condition.
The checklist is a useful tool for graduate nurses, orientees and seasoned nurses who need a refresher on a particular skill. Many skills have videos, animations and 3D videos to provide visuals for the skill content. There are also Continuing Education (CE) credits available for every skill, making it easy and convenient for nurses to meet their licensure requirements.
Whether you access the platform through Success Factors, your electronic health record (EHR), or through your mobile device, Clinical Skills are available to provide the most current evidence-based content to help you provide the best care to your patients, identify changes in patient condition, and ensure the best patient outcomes. Below are specific Elsevier skills that Houston Methodist has access to and can use to reinforce nursing knowledge and best practice.
