Advancing Patient Safety Through Systemization: Expanding the ICON Initiative Across Houston Methodist

At Houston Methodist, our commitment to delivering safe, high-quality and evidence-based care is unwavering. As healthcare systems grow in complexity, the need to standardize best practices across all care environments becomes increasingly critical. One such initiative that exemplifies this commitment is the Infection Control on Nursing (ICON) curriculum, an innovative, evidence-based program designed to strengthen infection prevention practices and improve patient safety outcomes.
From Innovation to Implementation: The ICON Journey
Developed by the Center for Nursing Research, Education and Practice (CNREP), the ICON curriculum was designed to standardize essential infection prevention protocols, including central line dressing changes and assessment methods across nursing units. Building on its early success at Houston Methodist Hospital, ICON has demonstrated meaningful improvements in infection prevention outcomes while reducing variation in nursing practice. Seeing its substantial impact, we initiated ICON at Houston Methodist Clear Lake (HMCL), strategically adapting the program for a community hospital while maintaining adherence to evidence-based standards.
Implementation in a Community Hospital Setting
The ICON rollout at HMCL bridged system-level innovation with frontline practice. To support successful adoption, we employed a structured approach that incorporated a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis to assess readiness and pinpoint improvement areas. This analysis revealed key strengths: strong staff engagement, organizational backing and professional curriculum delivery. It also identified opportunities in communication, visual reinforcement and technology optimization. With targeted interventions, including enhanced education, reinforcement tactics and collaboration with quality and infection prevention teams, ICON became embedded in clinical workflows.
Measurable Impact on Patient Safety
The implementation of ICON at HMCL contributed to measurable improvements in patient safety outcomes, particularly by reducing hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) through alignment of infection prevention strategies with standardized clinical practices.
Beyond clinical outcomes, the program also strengthened nurse confidence, accountability and adherence to best practices, essential components of a high-reliability organization.
These advances demonstrate the strength of combining structured education, real-time reinforcement and data-driven performance monitoring.

Sustainability underpins the long-term success of any quality initiative. Through ongoing partnership with quality leaders, infection prevention teams and nursing education councils, we have strengthened auditing, reinforcement techniques and continuous feedback loops.
Additionally, aligning ICON with broader educational frameworks, such as competency-based learning, simulation training and interprofessional collaboration, has enabled us to embed infection prevention into the culture of nursing excellence.
