Empowered to Grow: A Nurse’s Journey Through Opportunity and Transformation
By Rona Khadka, MSN, RN, CCRN, CPAN – RN IV, Walter3 PACU – Houston Methodist Hospital

When I first began my nursing journey in Nepal, I never imagined how far it would take me. I simply hoped to learn, grow and provide care for others to the best of my ability. I spent my first two years in the ICU, where I built the foundation of my practice and learned resilience, compassion and teamwork. I joined Houston Methodist Hospital (HMH) in January 2021 as part of the Walter 3 PACU team, and looking back, this has become a true turning point in my nursing career. I began to recognize the opportunities that could help me grow beyond what I had imagined for myself when I got into nursing.
When I first started at HMH, I was genuinely inspired by the strong culture of growth and support for nurses. From the Clinical Career Pathway to financial assistance for certifications and higher education, I found myself surrounded and supported in an environment that encouraged continuous learning. This support gave me the confidence to pursue goals I once thought were beyond my reach, including completing my Master’s in Nursing Education, earning dual certifications and being promoted to RN IV role status back in January 2025. As I reflect on my journey, I realize these were not just milestones, but the shared outcome built on encouragement, learning and perseverance.
Along the way, I became involved in projects focused on improving patient care and advancing professional practice, which led to new opportunities to share my work beyond my unit. This included presenting at the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) conferences in 2024 and 2025 as podium presentations. It is with immense pleasure that I can report that our team’s most recent poster presentation at the ASPAN 2026 conference was recognized with third place overall. Each experience has reinforced that growth often comes from saying yes to opportunities, even when they feel intimidating.
Another meaningful part of my journey was joining Sigma in 2024. I was honored to serve as a delegate at the Sigma Convention in Indianapolis in 2025, and I will also be presenting at the 37th International Nursing Research Congress in Toronto, Canada, in July 2026. These experiences continue to gently push me outside my comfort zone in the best way. I am truly grateful for the opportunities that Sigma has provided. I would encourage nurses to consider joining as a wonderful platform to grow, share their voice and connect with a global nursing community that inspires and supports one another. You can learn more information about Sigma here: alphagammagamma.sigmanursing.org/home.
I remain deeply grateful to my mentors, colleagues, leaders and my husband, who has been my biggest supporter throughout this journey. I have been especially fortunate to work with an incredible manager whose encouragement and belief in her team have shaped my personal and professional growth. Nursing is not always easy, but I have learned that persistence, support and the environment you work in make a real difference. More than anything, I have learned to keep moving forward, keep learning and never stop dreaming. If my journey can encourage even one nurse to recognize their potential and take a step toward growth, I would be truly grateful.
