Nursing Specialty Certifications
Nursing specialty certifications enhance patient care quality and support nurses’ professional development. Houston Methodist encourages eligible nurses to pursue and maintain these credentials by offering financial assistance.
To qualify for this benefit, the certification must be recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program. For the most up-to-date list, visit The HUB and search for the Magnet-recognized Certification List.
In alignment with System_NU014 Nursing Professional Development Support, eligible nurses may receive financial assistance through two types of payment programs:
Initial Certification Prepaid Exam Vouchers
Each Houston Methodist hospital participates in select prepaid exam-voucher programs. Through these programs, eligible nurses receive a voucher code to use when registering or applying for a certification exam. Availability and benefits vary by exam provider and are not offered for all certification types.
Eligibility for an Initial Certification Exam Voucher
- The nurse has been employed at Houston Methodist for at least 90 days
- The certification is recognized by the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program
- The voucher is a one-time benefit per certification
- No more than two professional certifications per nurse may be funded by Houston Methodist.
- Exception: If a new certification is required and the nurse already holds two or more certifications, the cost of the initial exam will be covered.
- The certification must be relevant to the nurse’s current specialty or role
Reimbursement for Initial Certifications and Recertifications
If a voucher program is not available for the exam needed, nurses may request reimbursement for one exam attempt after successfully passing the exam. Expense reports should be submitted as soon as proof of certification is received and no later than 30 days after the exam date.
Required Documentation
- A receipt from the professional organization showing payment for the exam and the date of purchase
- A copy of the certification earned
