Houston Methodist is committed to supporting PCAs at every stage of their professional journey — from novice to expert. The system offers development pathways that strengthen clinical skills, elevate patient care and empower PCAs to advance within their practice.
Our Houston Methodist Hospital Advanced Competencies course helps PCAs enhance performance and build the foundation needed for exceptional patient care. The program integrates hands‑on instruction with interactive simulation to strengthen confidence, competence and collaboration.

Promotion Opportunity: PCA Specialist
Are you ready to take the next step in your PCA career?
The PCA Specialist role is designed for PCAs with:
- At least three years of acute care experience
- Advanced knowledge and competencies required to communicate effectively and perform delegated nursing assistant-level tasks for the assigned patient population, contributing to high-quality care and patient outcomes
Role Overview: PCA Specialist
PCAs with at least three years of acute care experience may pursue advancement into the PCA Specialist role.
PCA Specialists serve as highly skilled resources within the PCA scope of practice by:
The HMH Leadership Development for the PCA Specialist course is required for promotion and uses scenario‑based simulations to build skills in:
- Supporting and guiding PCA staff
- Mentoring colleagues in daily clinical practice
- Modeling high‑quality patient‑care delivery
- Precepting and mentoring
- Emergency response
- Delegation
- Bedside care and communication
Promotion Guidelines
To qualify for PCA Specialist promotion, candidates must:
- Participate in at least one house-wide or department committee/council (≥70% attendance)
- Examples include Shared Governance or Patient Experience Committee
- Complete two classes or four education hours annually, including:
- HMH Leadership Development for PCA Specialist
- Quarterly ICON training sessions
- Serve as an equipment-specific user/champion (e.g., 12-lead EKG, phlebotomy, delirium champion, fall champion)
- Achieve a performance rating of 4 – Outstanding in the most recent FPR cycle
