Standardizing Excellence: How Unified Education Strengthens Patient Safety Across Houston Methodist
By Lenis Sosa, DNP, RN, CCRC - Manager Clinical Education - Houston Methodist Clear Lake Hospital

Houston Methodist’s reputation for exceptional, patient-centered care is rooted in a clear, systemwide commitment: every clinical employee, regardless of hospital, specialty or role, deserves the same world-class education. As our system grows and our patient population becomes more complex, standardized learning is not just beneficial; it is essential for ensuring consistent, reliable and safe care across all hospitals. To meet this need, clinical education leaders from every Houston Methodist entity collaborate to design, refine and standardize our signature clinical learning programs, including:
- Foundations in Nursing (FIN)
- Clinical Orientation for a Reliable Experience (CORE) – launching March 2026
- Charge Nurse (CN) Courses
- Preceptor Development Program
Why Systemwide Standardization Matters
1. Consistent Care Across All Hospitals
By teaching shared competencies in safety, communication and clinical readiness, we ensure that every RN, PCA and clinical learner begins with the same foundation. This reduces practice variation and supports stronger patient outcomes.
2. A Unified Professional Identity
Jointly developed curricula solidify shared expectations and reinforce our I CARE values, shaping a cohesive nursing culture across all hospitals.
3. Scalable Excellence and Workforce Mobility
A standardized foundation supports cross-campus staffing, eases transitions between entities and enables rapid, consistent adoption of new best practices.
4. Embedded I CARE Values
From onboarding through advanced leadership development, every course intentionally integrates Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence.
Overview of Key System Courses
CORE Orientation
Equips all new clinical staff with essential safety competencies, including alarms management, fall prevention, patient identification, suicide screening, sharps safety and pressure injury prevention. CORE ensures shared expectations and behavioral alignment from day one.
Foundations in Nursing (FIN)
Provides acuity-specific, systemwide clinical skills through simulation, hands-on training and interdisciplinary collaboration. FIN reduces orientation variability and ensures bedside readiness across all hospitals.
Charge Nurse (CN) Courses
Strengthen leadership behaviors, communication, patient flow management and unit-level decision-making. CN courses align leadership expectations and create a consistent charge nurse culture across the system.
Preceptor Development Program
Prepare experienced nurses to mentor, coach and evaluate new staff using adult learning principles and structured assessment. This program ensures equitable, high-quality preceptorship across the system.
Clinical educators across all campuses meet regularly to review content, resolve differences and ensure that each course reflects the needs of the entire system rather than those of individual entities. Whether teaching the Braden Scale, TAPS reporting, falls risk assessment or system policies, all campuses rely on the same tools, expectations and evaluation methods. Simulation scenarios, skills checklists and assessments are co-developed to ensure consistent teaching and equitable learning across the system.
Through every program, we reinforce ICARE values and cultivate the behaviors essential for our expanding, systemwide team.
CORE Orientation: Our Newest Systemwide Commitment to Safety
Launching in March 2026, the updated CORE Orientation will serve as the universal onboarding program for all new clinical employees. Built collaboratively by educators from every hospital, CORE focuses on the system’s highest-risk, highest-impact safety areas to ensure that every team member begins their journey fully prepared to protect our patients.
The collaboration behind CORE, FIN, CN leadership courses and Preceptor Development reflects more than shared curriculum; it reflects a shared mission. Through systemwide standardization, we strengthen our workforce, support our nurses and most importantly, deliver consistent, compassionate, exceptional care to every patient, in every hospital, every time.
