The mission of the Houston Methodist System Magnet Program Director (MPD) Council is to align and support the dissemination and enculturation of the Magnet Model to achieve nursing and interprofessional excellence in practice. The council is a powerful driver of systematization because it establishes a unified framework for operationalizing Magnet principles across the system. The council is working to establish shared expectations and consistent processes to support nursing excellence in a coordinated way rather than through isolated, site-specific efforts.
At the entity level, each MPD plays a critical role in cultivating a culture of shared governance, clinical inquiry and staff engagement. MPDs also facilitate the Magnet designation and redesignation process, ensuring that staff understand the standards and can demonstrate exemplary practice. They also monitor Nursing Sensitive Indicator (NSI) performance, including patient experience, quality and RN engagement, to identify opportunities for improvement and highlight areas of excellence. Each MPD brings unique expertise and innovative strategies to the council, contributing to shared problem-solving, mitigating potential barriers and aligning with systemwide strategic goals.
At the system level, the MPD Council strives to create a shared interpretation of Magnet standards to prevent each hospital from having to “reinvent the wheel.” This includes sharing tools, templates and resources for document writing, site visit preparation and other Magnet education needs. The council has collaborated to provide system-wide education on key Magnet elements such as shared governance and transformational leadership. Additionally, the group centralizes decision-making on changes that impact Magnet-related metrics, including patient experience surveys, RN engagement surveys and quality outcomes reporting. This structure supports clarity and consistency across all entities.
The System MPD Council also functions as a supportive network for each MPD throughout the redesignation process. They assist one another in reviewing and editing narratives, performing mock site visits and, most recently, providing in-person support during site visits. This collaborative approach strengthens the quality of submissions, enhances readiness and reinforces a shared commitment to excellence. As a unified team, the MPDs brainstorm narrative ideas, share best practices and offer hands-on assistance to ensure the success of every hospital in the system.
Together, the System MPD Council continues to strengthen the foundation of nursing excellence across the system. Their collective commitment streamlines Magnet work, elevates the voice of nursing, enhances patient outcomes and reinforces a culture of excellence. They are not only sustaining Magnet excellence—they are shaping their future.
